I recently had the pleasure of shooting my brother-in-laws surprise engagement session. It was supposed to be a fun photo shoot to prepare for an upcoming engagement session, little did she know that my brother in-law contacted me before this session to inform me of his plan to use this photo shoot as the perfect time to pop the question to his lovely girlfriend. Of course I was excited! I knew his sister, my wife, would be over the moon about this! So I knew this shoot was going to be a big one for our family. I had to make sure I found the right place and to try and keep it all a big secret so the surprise wasn’t spoiled. I arranged to shoot them at the beautiful Bywater Hollow Lavender Farm. This private property is incredible! The owners are a really nice family who seem to enjoy having photographers and families take incredible photos while enjoying the scenery.
So I was very happy to have booked this location as I knew it would make the occasion more memorable. Once we got there I started off with some safe shots, to simply warm them up to being photographed as well to warm myself up to try and get my photographic creative juices going.
Beautiful so far! The light was great and right away I could tell that they were both ready to take incredible photos together, they warmed up quickly.
One of the best things about photographing a couple is getting them to reconnect with each other. It doesn’t sound like that would be the time to connect, in fact for some people I bet taking pictures is downright stressful and painful. But for me, I really try to have couples engage with each other, not just pose and smile, I really want them to emote for the picture so I have them turn to look at each other and take some time enjoying each other’s presence. I have them touch each other and talk to one another. I love to see them reconnect in our busy world. It didn’t take much for Ryan & Crystal to seize this moment with other. Closer, closer, closer…..jeez.
I really love this scene, it reminds me of a lazy Sunday, just being with your loved one, relaxing and simply being together. The light was pretty incredible, too! But I really love the following scenes, as the big surprise was well under way….
As you can see, what a beautiful moment!! Its times like this, I feel so privileged to be able to document these precious moments for people in a way that they can cherish for the rest of their lives. This is why I got into photography to begin with, and its why I will continue to keep shooting precious moments for people.
By the way, check out this gorgeous ring!
By the way did I mention how easy it was for these two to connect in front of the camera?! There’s nothing more inspiring or beautiful as watching two people madly in love with each other!
I love those scenes! I love that classic golden hour style, that golden hazy naturally backlit scene that makes couples just pop from the photo!!
But I also really love scenes like these below….
I absolutely love these shots, the colors, the simplicity, the mood it conveys….
The mood after the shoot was one of excitement and pure happiness. Afterwards we went out for drinks and dinner to celebrate the newly engaged couple, both of them were beaming with love and joy. We toasted to the new couple and talked about goals and dreams for their future. I for one am so proud and excited for the both of them. I look forward to watching them grow and build a life together. I can’t wait for the wedding! Love you guys!
